CABLE STRAIN RELIEF

For this project I was tasked with testing the strength of a wire. Originally this test was done by hand bending the wire potentially hundred of times before it finally broke. I did not want to bend a wire back and forth hundreds of times, so with the permission of my supervisor I came up with a way to automate this test.

We already had a structure in the workshop that would attach to a drill on one end and a drill chuck on the other that could hold various attachments. I decided to create another attachment for this structure for the purposes of my test. I needed a way to convert circular motion from the drill chuck into linear motion that would pull the wire back and forth. After some research I decided on a scotch yoke mechanism and came up with prototype you see above. To perform a test the wire is placed between the washers and tightened with a screw and the housing for the button is placed in holder on the right as you can see in the image below. Then all you need to do is set a timer and press the trigger on the drill and wait until the wire breaks.
