LOCK PROJECT
This is an independent project I started while at my first co-op. I continued working of this project when I had time during the next semester, however I had to move on from this project when I moved to Munich. The idea was to automate the front door lock when I was living in Boston. Improvements can be made to the locking mechanism, however the electrical and software aspects of the project work very well. I programmed an Arduino UNO board to trigger a servo when a reed switch shuts. The lock is turned shut by a rack and pinion mechanism that is controlled directly by the servo. The reed switch is fixed to the door, and a magnet is fixed to the door frame so the servo triggers once the door is shut.

Custom Components:
3D printed gear: designed in Solidworks, printed on FDM 3D printer
Rack and Pinion mechanism: designed in Solidworks, laser cut clear 1/4" acrylic

Original Design:
-
the gear is around the lock and the servo directly controls movement
-
problem with design: servo couldn't reach teeth of gear about half way through locking

Improved Design:
-
The servo is connected to a rack and pinion mechanism that is directly attached to the lock through glue
-
Potential problem: weak point of contact lock
